Planning an affordable guest room makeover? It can be done for under $1,000. One of the benefits of living near Yellowstone National Park is that our friends and family frequently visit, and we love to host visitors! We struggled with decorating our guest room, but thanks to some great finds at Target we were able to conduct an affordable guest room makeover for under $1,000.
We have a spare room in the basement, which has gone through several iterations. For awhile, the room was used as a home office. When we no longer needed a home office, the room languished and basically became a storage room full of unopened moving boxes, old office furniture, and unused electronics. It was a mess!

We finally removed ALL the unopened boxes, office furniture, and electronics making space for a dedicated guest room. After a quick makeover, our guests now have an elegant and comfortable room to stay in.

Inspired by luxury hotels, I wanted a very serene vibe for the room. Here’s what we purchased to accomplished that.
Shopping List for a $1,000 Guest Room Makeover
- Green Velvet Quilt: $99 (King size). I saw a similar quilt at a hotel and wanted to recreate the look in our guest room.
- Sam’s Club Sheets: $79.98 (King size). I have tried DOZENS of sheets over time, including from some of the more expensive brands, and I always go back to Sam’s Club. These sheets are very soft and luxurious.
- Duvet Cover: $79 (King size). Inspired by luxury hotels, I wanted a white waffle-weave duvet cover and this one from Target is perfect. The white is out of stock, but other colors are still available.
- Two Pillows: $30 each (King size). I LOVE these pillows from Target, they are so soft and fluffy.
- Two Side Tables: $149 each. These tables arrive FULLY ASSEMBLED – which is great for those of us who wish to avoid furniture assembly.
- Lamps: $60 each. These lamps from Target are very similar to the lamps that we originally purchased (which are no longer available).
- Faux Plant: $69.98. Always nice to have some greenery in a guest room.
- Candle: $12. Our guest room is in the basement, and I always worry about musty smells. This lovely candle makes the room smell fresh.
- Towels: $8-$12 each, we bought several for a total of $80. I love the look of super clean, soft white towels for a guest room. These from Target are plush and absorbent.
- Brass Tray: $20. A tray for essentials such as a phone charger, matches for the candle, and other items.
- Brass Trash Can: $20. A nice match to the brass tray and the two side tables.
Altogether, our guest room makeover cost under $1,000. We were able to stay within that budget because we already owned many of the items, such as the mattress, headboard, artwork, and other items. Next on the list, a guest bathroom makeover!
